I have been inspired by the complexity and beauty of Marine Industrial images. Hard metal and steel juxtaposed with soft, fluid, translucent sky and water.

From my earliest memories, I’ve been drawing and painting.
After studying art in Japan, the U.S., and Germany in my formative years, I pursued German Expressionism which evolved into Abstract Expressionism, Abstraction, and finally, Realism.
Realism gives me a sense of place. I combine different elements from studies to make a composition. Canaletto inspired me to paint urban scenes with realistic detail, and Martin Johnson Heade tantalized me with Romanticism.
My edges are soft and blended with images developed by applying many thin layers of oil paint. Working on a dark underpainting, I achieve more depth, luminosity, and vibrancy of color. Directional light, double images, and reflections are part of the equation. I use a classical focal central point on the canvas and a juxtaposition of hard, dense, and solid against soft, translucent, and fluid.
Having painted land scenes, seascapes, marine industrial scenes, and urbanscapes for several decades, I visited Tanzania and saw elephants in their natural habitat, and voilà—new inspiration!
I employ the same principles used in previous works, while adding auras highlighting the magnificence of the elephants—they are the most grand and inspiring animals I’ve ever experienced. We were amongst a herd of 250, and 1,000 photos later, I’m experiencing them again, but with tempera, gouache on paper, and oil on linen.
We are all creatures of this earth, but for me, these elephants are the most treasured. I fear the ivory trade and the wanton decimation of these great beasts. Presenting these animals with exuberance conveys my hope for their future.
